Martin Coates
Technical Director with Beca
Presentation : “Visualisation - A powerful tool for communicating change”
A 90 minute workshop
In the current world of information overload, the need for organisations to communicate change effectively has never been so great. How do you get staff and clients on board as quickly as possible, understanding new systems and roles? The high level strategic vision for a company can often be lost in translation before it reaches the people on the shop floor, yet the company requires understanding and buy-in across the whole organisation to realise the vision. This presentation will cover the current challenges to effective communication, the Visualisation process, and the benefits of using this approach. The presentation will include a number of real life examples and success stories.
Hands on : “Visualisation – converting complex jargon into engaging visuals”
The purpose of this session will be to apply some of the practical tools described above. Attendees will be presented with a hypothetical case study and provided with a set of visual metaphors to translate complex wording into a visual message. This will be a fun and interactive session, providing attendees with a set of take away practical visualisation tools to assist with ongoing communications.
About Martin Coates
In the modern world of information overload, picking out what’s important is becoming an increasing challenge. Martin Coates has developed a unique and innovative approach to communication called “Visualisation”. This Visualisation process involves translating complex messages into hand-drawn illustrations created live during workshop sessions. This process helps shape a common understanding of key issues and alignment of thinking through group interaction and discussion – in effect, condensing complex messages into simple to understand yet meaningful visual representations to support communications .
Martin Coates is a chartered Chemical Engineer with over 25 years’ industrial experience in variety of engineering and man-management roles. He is currently employed as a Technical Director with Beca, based in Auckland. In addition to providing technical solutions, Martin also delivers Visualisation services to a range of clients, helping them to comprehend complexity and communicate change. Recent clients have included New Zealand Steel, Auckland Zoo, Veoila, Kiwirail, Downer Engineering, Metro Trains Melbourne, Australian Capital Territories Electricity and Water, Southern Rural Water, NZTA, Auckland Motorway Alliance, Victoria Park Tunnel Alliance, all branches of defence in New Zealand and the Royal Australian Navy. Martin gives regular public presentations on the subject of Visualisation, and uses his visual approach to lecture Project Management for the MBA program at the Auckland Institute of Studies.
