Pete Burdon
Founder and Head Trainer, Media Training NZ
Introduction to becoming a great spokesperson
This workshop will introduce attendees to the subtleties of media interviews. The focus will be on how they differ from any other conversation. It will look at how to prepare for media interviews and how to use them as opportunities rather than threats.
The session will cover four specific areas. These are body language, media messaging, sound bites and how these must come together when answering questions.
Video clips of the newsmakers will be used to highlight points, while attendees will be asked to prepare their own media message and sound bites for a given scenario. The workshop will be highly interactive.
About Pete Burdon
Pete Burdon is founder and head trainer of Media Training NZ. As a former journalist and still a freelancer, he is well aware of what the media want and how to give it to them.
Just as importantly, Pete has worked on the other side of the news. As a high-profile press secretary for the New Zealand Government, he advised both Cabinet Ministers and local members of parliament on how to deal effectively with the media. His advisory role also extended to that of spokesperson.
After performing similar roles for a major industry lobby group and public relations company, he formed Media Training NZ. Pete’s background puts him in the unique position of understanding the needs and perspectives of both interviewer and interviewee.
He has two Masters Degrees. The first was achieved in Journalism at the University of Canterbury and the second in Communication Management from the Sydney University of Technology.
